Who will vie for top spot in Goldilocks' 10th Intercollegiate Cake Decorating Challenge this February 25? Kids can join too! #ICDC

The Goldilocks event I attended recently has definitely jogged my memory.
As I sit here writing this, I can close my eyes and see my make-believe kitchen slash cooking show room at my parents’ old house. Usually on weekends, I would make yummy treats like Yema balls and Polvoron and sell it to dad's employees. Piso isa.

I had this dream of creating a special cake for my family or even putting up a cake store when I was a lot younger. Fun for me was pre-measuring baking ingredients, putting them on small bowls or cups, then arranging them perfectly in line on the table. It was such a happy feeling adding each ingredient as I mix them and pretending I was on a cooking show.
Yes, I was a frustrated baker.
Before college, I knew I always wanted to take something related to food. I loved baking, but my mind was debating whether to pursue it or not because I knew I had limited baking skills and was never good at it. Thus, making me choose a pre-med course instead.

So, when I received the invite from Goldilocks, I was overjoiyed but scared at the same time, I did not want to go. Why? Thinking it will only revive my first love and passion for baking. My body's just not equipped for multitasking nowadays and can no longer do the mommy thing while baking and attending events all at the same time.
But I did go anyway and had the best day!
My 30-minute creation! LOL
They had an impromptu Cake decorating contest for the media, but it was really a sneak preview into the challenges of cake decorating for the highly anticipated Goldilocks 10th Intercollegiate cake decorating challenge of Goldilocks Bakeshop that will fall on the 25th of February.
It's Harder than it looks!!

Yes, I got to feel what it's like to bake again. Putting my hands into something and creating good stuff, brings so much joy, like being transported back to my childhood.
I was not sure why I was one of the chosen ones because as you can see below, all the creations were fabulous! But I'm truly honored. Thank you :) #BestDayEver

The good thing about this event is that they'll showcase the skills of the students more rather than professional bakers, which coexists with one of the principals of Goldilocks -- the development of next level talent.
This is truly favorable for the students to help them own their craft , as well as to help the cake industry in the country.

Goldilocks started this event 10 years ago during their 40th anniversary, and now, since Goldilocks is celebrating its 50th anniversary, this year's activities will be special but X-tremely challenging.

The chosen 10 schools who will join this years ICDC will be mentored by well-known pastry chefs.
As early as November last year, they invited schools with HRM courses nationwide to send their entries and had the pre-judging just last January.

The 10 finalists are from NCR , 3 from South Luzon, 2 from North, 1 from Mindanao, and 1 from Visayas. From these regions, they will all compete on February 25, to be held at SM North Edsa.
Aside from the awesome prizes like baking showcases, cash prizes, and gift certificates, they will offer 2-year employment for the overall winner.

These are the 10 qualifiers:

  • Calayan Educational Foundation
  • Colegio de San Lorenzo
  • DMCI College Foundation Dipolog
  • Far Eastern University
  • Lyceum of the Philippines Laguna
  • Lyceum Subic Bay
  • Pangasinan State University
  • Saint Anne College of Lucena
  • Trinity University of Asia
  • Western Institute of Technology Iloilo

The 10 mentors are:

  • Jackie Laudico
  • Tristan Encarnacion
  • Jackie Ang-Po
  • Buddt Trinidad
  • James Antolin
  • Joan Leslie Dela Cruz
  • Amador Mendoza
  • Pixie Sevilla-Santos
  • Rizalino Manas Jr.
  • Bryan Dimayuga

Chef Rizalino and Bryan were past ICDI winners but now mentors for this year's ICDC. They've already won several awards abroad.

Each finalist team will have an intensive 1-day training session, facilitated by their assigned mentor.
They will learn signature tricks of the trade in using whipped cream and fondant, as well as other skills for that added edge in competition.

But what excites me terribly is that finally they will launch X-Treme for the kids ( Junior Cake Decorator )who can compete this February 25 also.

So, mommies, here's how your kids can join the exciting competition :

  • Parents will have to buy Goldilocks DYC Kit and theirs kids ages 6 to 12 years old will have to design their cake entries. The Kit includes icing, topper , everything you need!
  • Entries must be photographed then uploaded to the DYC Facebook Page and email t promo@goldilocks.com.ph for selection and Judging.
  • 10 kids will be chosen among the entries, who will undergo a fun cake decorating workshop facilitated by Goldilocks' cake decorators.
  • After the workshop, the kids will pit their best DYC cake designs in the junior cake decorators competition.

Being a parent can be nerve-wracking at most times, so we need to do something therapeutic once in a while.
Since my kids are a bit older now, the majority chose baking for our bonding sesh.
I cannot wait to have our own set of baking tools and the posh oven! And most of all, I cannot wait to catch their smiles when they say "I made this for you, mommy".
