#KilusangKontraKuto : How To Be Head Lice-Free With #Licealiz

Say "kuto" no more!

2 weeks ago, I dragged my enervated self to watch the movie The Switch - my perfect choice for a chick flick with a good ending while in the middle of my hibernating state of mind. Perfect timing I thought as I received an invite the next day to cover an event for Head Lice Awareness Month-- Yes, September is the Head Lice Awareness Month. And very timely too for my daughter was complaining of scalp itchiness.
But, what does this have to do with the movie?

You see, one of the scenes there was related to a kid who had a case of head lice and the gorgeous Jennifer Aniston instructed the bestfriend on how to treat it. Of course, now that I have kids of my own, the good mother in me listened intently.
But thankfully, Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz made me part of this campaign for it cleared my mind about certain things like a child being excluded from or allowed to miss school time just because of head lice. Totally wrong info there.
Head lice or "kuto" is a social concern that everybody can be a victim of especially the children. When you realized that your kids are infested with that small, wingless insect destroying the humans(maybe I watch too many horror films, LOL), your body reacts negatively in an instant with emotions like panic, desperation, or even shame on the side.
Shame - not just for you but for your kid as well. But not a good reason to stay out of school for a while. That is why, Licealiz is here to save the day.. or your head for that matter.
Last September 8, mommy bloggers were invited to have a tour of the activation at Bagong Nayon 1 Elementary School in Antipolo to witness the last leg of Licealiz’s Nationwide Oplan Alis Kuto in action, and then we went to meet the Kilusang Kontra Kuto with Ms. Love Añover.
The Kilusang Kontra Kuto program is educating communities about the facts and myths of head lice and sharing ways on how to prevent the spread in the communities. This is led by Lamoiyan Corporation, in partnership with the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines(MCNAP) and supported by the UP Manila College of Public Health.

We were told that for the past 5 years, head louse is considered to be the 3rd most common problem among children.
Since 2004, there was 72% prevalence already, meaning 72% of 8 million kids surveyed that time = POSITIVE for Pediculosis or head lice infestation that is considered as permanent infestation among students in public schools only.

Being infected with head lice has nothing to do with cleanliness. Even entomologist, UP Manila professor, and head lice expert, Dr. Arlene Bertuso, can become helpless when faced with that small, living horror. No one is spared from it.

So, what can we do to prevent the spread?
  • Us moms should regularly inspect , not just our kids' hair, but the hair of everyone in the household. Remind your kids to take a bath regularly and wash the hair properly. And no, using different shampoo brands will not lice-infect you.
  • Refrain from sharing combs, towels, and other materials that touch the hair as head lice spreads through physical contact with infested objects. They do not, I repeat, they do not jump or fly. It's head-to-head contact. They can also transfer from bed sheet to your hair. Regularly change beddings and pillows. You can use vaccum for the couch. Use a suyod after washing just like what celebrity mom Ms. Love Añover said.
"When I was a child, we only used a suyod. No over-the-counter hair treatment yet. Now that I have a daughter, we wanted to try something clinically tested and proven in removing lice, not just the suyod,"
  • Use only the perfect head lice treatment (Pyrethrin) which is non-toxic and clinically proven to effectively kill both the louse and its eggs. Licealiz prevents recurrence while keeping the hair soft and smooth because it has conditioner too.
"After 2 weeks of use, my child was lice-free and the hair smelled so good too!" she shared.

Recommended to use twice a week for two weeks for treatment of head lice, and once a week for prevention.

The Kilusang Kontra Kuto is all about helping the community stop the spread of misinformation about head lice and to remove the stigma associated being infected.

This month, Licealiz will continue arranging shampooing programs and activities for public school students all over the country and will also be posting educational materials on head lice and how to fight them on facebook.
