While flipping through channels recently, I landed on Father of the Bride, the 1991 comedy starring Steve Martin, and I couldn’t help but watch it again. Even after seeing it so many times, it still tugs at my heartstrings and makes me laugh and cry all over again.
George Banks, played by Steve Martin, is a loving father and owner of an athletic shoe company in San Marino, California. His 22-year-old daughter, Annie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley), shocks him with the news that she’s marrying Bryan MacKenzie (George Newbern), a young man from a wealthy Bel-Air family, after only three months of dating.
George’s initial reaction is classic panic: he worries about losing his little girl, frets over the $250-per-guest wedding costs, and goes to hilarious lengths to “manage” the ceremony. With his patient wife Nina (Diane Keaton) trying to calm him and the eccentric wedding planner Franck (Martin Short) taking over, George learns that life is moving forward and he has to let go a little.
The father-daughter dance scene is unforgettable. It’s a reminder of the fleeting moments we have with our children. Personally, it hits me hard, my own last dance with my dad was at my 18th birthday, and watching George with Annie brings back a rush of memories.
Aside from the story, George Banks’ home is absolutely iconic. Spacious, elegant, and full of character, it’s no wonder it’s become a dream house for many fans of the film.
Though it’s categorized as a comedy, Father of the Bride often feels like a tear-jerker. The humor is perfect, but the real charm is in its heartfelt depiction of family, growing up, and learning to let go.
George Banks sums it up beautifully:
"A wedding is not just a ceremony. It’s a moment where you realize your little girl has grown up, and life will never be the same. That’s when you understand the true meaning of love and family."
Watching Father of the Bride reminds us that even as children grow and move on, the bond with family remains unbreakable. It’s funny, emotional, and timeless, a story that hits every parent and child in the heart.
