For 100 years, Mapúa University has evolved from a local institution into a globally recognized leader in engineering and technology education.
With a commitment to academic excellence and innovation, Mapúa has positioned itself among the world’s top universities, continuously introducing new programs and enhancing its curriculum.A Legacy of Achievement
Founded in 1925 with just 75 students, Mapúa has grown significantly, now serving thousands of learners across campuses in Makati, Laguna, and Davao, in addition to its main campus in Intramuros. The university initially offered two engineering and architecture courses, but today it boasts over 70 undergraduate degrees, more than 50 graduate programs, and a diverse selection of short courses.
Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo, President and CEO of Mapúa, emphasizes the institution's commitment to empowering students from various backgrounds. “The legacy that Mapúa has built since 1925 is the result of our collective efforts to gain local and international recognition,” he stated during a recent media launch.
Academic Excellence and Innovation
Mapúa’s commitment to innovation has led to recognition in prestigious rankings. In 2022, the university made its debut in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, alongside three other Philippine institutions. Additionally, Mapúa is recognized as a Quacquarelli Symonds 4-Star institution and ranks among the top 100 universities in Southeast Asia.
The university's strength lies not only in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields but also in expanding programs that include business, health sciences, and media studies. New programs in energy engineering, data science, game development, financial technology, and business intelligence have been introduced to align with industry demands, ensuring students graduate with relevant, specialized skills.
Quality Matters Certification and Online Learning
In a significant achievement, Mapúa and its sister schools became the first in the Philippines to receive Quality Matters (QM) certification for select online courses. This recognition reflects the high standards of quality and innovation in the university's online offerings.
Dr. Lilibeth Sabino, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, highlighted the importance of evolving academic programs to meet industry needs: “Our new programs are designed to grow the technically competent and agile workforce that industries need. This strategy is why Mapúa graduates are highly preferred by employers.”
Philanthropic Initiatives and Collaboration
In 2024, Mapúa launched two philanthropic learning resources: Mapúa Snippets and STEMTeach. These initiatives aim to make quality education accessible to younger students and STEM teachers, respectively. Both resources are part of the new MapúaX platform, which hosts various online courses and micro-credentials.
Mapúa’s collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU) has also been transformative, leading to new programs in health sciences, nursing, and business. This partnership facilitates the integration of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum, preparing students for the future job market.
Expanding Facilities and Future Goals
As part of its growth, Mapúa has expanded its facilities, including a new canteen and clinic at the Intramuros campus and state-of-the-art digital classrooms in partnership with Cisco. The upcoming Medicine wing in the Mapúa-Arizona State University Human Health Learning and Innovation Center will further enhance educational offerings.
Looking ahead, Mapúa aims to foster sustainable socio-economic growth through innovation, digital transformation, and lifelong education. With advanced educational technologies and international collaborations, the university is set to lead future generations toward successful, future-proof careers.
As Mapúa University approaches its centennial, it stands as a testament to the transformative power of education. Its commitment to excellence, innovation, and accessibility continues to shape the future of countless students, ensuring they are well-equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
