This holiday season, Boehringer Ingelheim is encouraging Filipinos to prioritize their health with the return of It Starts With U: Get CheCKD, a campaign designed to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its connections to heart disease and diabetes.
In partnership with Dialysis Philippines Support Group (Dialysis PH), Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines (KITAP), and the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), Boehringer Ingelheim held a successful event on November 30, 2024, at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in ParaƱaque City.
Raising Awareness During the Holiday Season
As Filipinos indulge in rich foods, drinks, and holiday stress, Boehringer Ingelheim’s event emphasizes the importance of taking care of your health. CKD is one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines and is closely linked to conditions like hypertension and diabetes, which are common during the festive season. The event showcased the risks of CKD and the importance of early detection through fun, interactive activities like the Check Your Choices Game Room, a life-sized board game designed to educate participants about kidney function and how to maintain kidney health.
Expert Talks and Health Screenings
The event featured two insightful talks from nephrologists Dr. Rhodora Valenzona and Dr. Clifton Pe, who discussed the links between CKD, heart disease, and diabetes. The talks encouraged attendees to make informed decisions for a healthier holiday season. Dr. Greta Cortez, Head of Medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, shared the significance of early detection in preventing CKD and its complications.
Attendees also had the opportunity to consult with doctors in the Health CheCKD Zone, where they received free health checks, including blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature monitoring. Those at risk for CKD were offered a free two-step kidney screening process.
The Simple Two-Step Kidney Health Check
The two-step screening process includes a blood test to measure creatinine levels and estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), followed by a urine test to measure albumin levels and assess kidney function. These simple tests can help detect CKD early and reduce the risks associated with it.
A Gift of Health for the Holidays
As part of the festive season, Boehringer Ingelheim reminds everyone that good health is the best gift you can give to yourself and your loved ones. Regular health checks, including kidney, heart, and blood sugar monitoring, are essential for maintaining overall wellness. Early detection of CKD, especially during the holiday season, can make a significant difference in improving health outcomes.
