In celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM Cares, SM Cinema, Autism Society Philippines (ASP), and GMA Pictures collaborated to host a successful sensory-friendly screening of the award-winning film Firefly on January 17, 2025.
The event, which took place across 10 SM malls, brought together over 2,000 participants, including children on the autism spectrum and their families, for an inclusive movie experience.“Every time we enter an SM mall, we feel acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation. It’s the norm here,” said Autism Society Philippines (ASP) Chair Emerita, Dang Uy Koe.
The sensory-friendly screening featured adjustments to lighting and sound, ensuring a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for attendees. These thoughtful modifications allowed participants to enjoy the film at their own pace while respecting their specific sensory needs.
Creating a Welcoming Environment for All
The "Lights Up, Sounds Down" event was more than just a movie screening – it was a celebration of inclusivity. By offering a tailored experience, the event ensured that everyone, regardless of their needs, could participate in the joy of cinema.
“At SM Supermalls, creating spaces where every individual feels valued, respected, and included is a responsibility we hold dearly. This is a way of life here,” said Engr. Bien Mateo, SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs.
Families expressed gratitude for the event, sharing how it provided a much-needed inclusive experience that made them feel welcome and appreciated.
