Watsons’ #Type1Story Campaign: A Brighter Future for Kids with Type 1 Diabetes

Watsons, the Philippines' leading health, wellness, and beauty retailer, is taking a major step in addressing a critical health issue affecting children: Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

Through its #Type1Story campaign, Watsons is spotlighting the inspiring stories of young Filipinos living with T1D while emphasizing the importance of early detection, screening, and diabetes management.

Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune condition typically diagnosed in childhood. It occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that helps convert food into energy and regulates blood sugar levels. Without insulin, blood sugar levels rise, leading to complications and potential long-term health risks. As the incidence of T1D increases, raising awareness about its early diagnosis and effective management is crucial. Proper blood sugar monitoring, balanced nutrition, exercise, and emotional support are key components of managing T1D.

Inspiring Stories of Children with Type 1 Diabetes

As part of the #Type1Story campaign, Watsons shares the journeys of three remarkable Filipino children battling T1D: Neo Eliseo Linga, Ana Sophia Valencia, and Liam James Lebron. These children, along with their families, have shown immense courage and resilience in managing the condition, and their stories stress the significance of early diagnosis and the right resources to support T1D management.

Neo Eliseo Linga

Diagnosed at age 2, Neo has been managing T1D for four years. His mother, Jhen, recalled how his symptoms were initially misdiagnosed, and it wasn't until a second ER visit that doctors discovered Neo was in a diabetic coma. This life-changing event led to their commitment to a strict regimen of blood sugar monitoring, insulin administration, and a balanced diet. Jhen emphasized the importance of learning and resilience: “We had to be resilient and bounce back for him, to keep him alive and healthy.”

Ana Sophia Valencia

Sophia was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 3. Her mother, Joanne, recounted a traumatic experience when Sophia went into a diabetic coma due to dangerously high blood sugar. After the hospitalization, the family overhauled their diet, replacing sugary foods with healthier options. Joanne shared, “We want her blood sugar to be as stable as possible so her organs won’t suffer, while also ensuring she has a normal childhood.”

Liam James Lebron

Diagnosed at 4, Liam’s frequent urination, excessive thirst, and weight loss led his family to seek medical attention. His mother, Majeg, shared how they manage his condition by carefully planning and portioning his meals. Majeg advised other parents to stay vigilant and seek professional help: “Listen to your child, be observant, and seek help, especially from doctors who understand it.”

Raising Awareness with Watsons #Type1Story

Support and Resources for Families

As part of the campaign, Watsons partnered with the Type 1 Diabetes Society PH and T1 Diabetes Parents PH to host a T1D Care Talk, led by Dr. Cristina Alberto, Diplomate of the Philippine Pediatrics Society. The event provided valuable insights on managing diabetes in children, with support from partners like Abbott Diabetes Care, Roche Diabetes, Exeltis, and Propan TLC.
