As climate change continues to intensify rainfall and raise the risk of flooding, building safer and more resilient communities has never been more important.
SM City La Union strengthens this mission as the 30th mall of SM Prime Holdings Inc. to feature a full rainwater catchment facility, expanding the company’s growing network of climate-ready infrastructure across the country.SM Supermalls designs these catchment systems to collect and store large volumes of stormwater before it can overwhelm local drainage networks. During strong rainfall, the system temporarily holds excess water and releases it gradually through proper channels. The underground catchment at SM City La Union provides a total capacity of 760 cubic meters, offering significant support to surrounding flood-prone communities.

Every drop saved helps build a safer and more sustainable tomorrow. With its long term Water for Tomorrow program, SM Prime continues to expand its efforts in responsible water management. The company treated and reused more water in 2024, achieving a 26.23 percent increase in recycled volume from 4.42 million cubic meters in 2023 to 5.59 million cubic meters.
Building resilience extends beyond physical infrastructure. Through SM Cares, the company promotes awareness on water conservation and encourages sustainable habits at home and within communities. These efforts help empower individuals to take part in long term climate action.
“Our rainwater catchment systems go beyond flood control. They help create safer spaces for our communities. We hope to show how climate smart infrastructure and innovation can protect lives, livelihoods, and progress,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.
