Hope and Light: DigiPlus and BingoPlus Foundation Bring Resilience to South Luzon

DigiPlus Interactive, through its social development branch, the BingoPlus Foundation, is positively impacting underserved communities in South Luzon.

As part of its continued commitment to fostering resilience, the Foundation introduced its KabuhayanPLUS program, delivering solar energy solutions to Mangyan Indigenous People (IP) communities in Mindoro and providing financial aid to families affected by Typhoon Kristine in the Bicol Region. These efforts are centered around disaster recovery and building long-term, sustainable livelihoods for those affected.

Bringing Light to the Mangyan IP Communities of Mindoro

Bright lights and smiles lit up the Mangyan Indigenous People (IP) community as BingoPlus Foundation traveled to the mountains of Manalansay, Oriental Mindoro. In response to a request from the Samahan ng Magbubukid ng Manaul (SaMa Manaul) for assistance, the Foundation delivered solar lights and generators to help solve the community’s long-standing electricity challenges.

Residents of Manaul shared the hardships they faced due to the lack of electricity, which affected both their livelihoods and children’s education. For many, the only source of light was the faint glow of a furnace or flashlight. Communication was also limited to trips to the town to charge mobile phones.

Liza Gayot, a long-time resident of Manaul, shared, “Even if I want to finish my work, I can’t because I can only work until there is light. As a mother, it really pains me to see my kids not being able to accomplish their schoolwork because it’s too dark to study at night.” She expressed gratitude to BingoPlus Foundation, saying, “You are the light of our life and home. After 20 years, we finally have lights in our own homes.”

Typhoon Relief for Families in Bicol Region

In addition to empowering communities with solar solutions, BingoPlus Foundation also made significant strides in helping families affected by Super Typhoon Kristine. The Foundation had pledged Php37 Million in financial assistance to victims, starting in November 2024. In collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office V, BingoPlus Foundation has been providing financial aid to 74 families from the provinces of Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and Masbate from January to February 2025.

The DSWD also contributed family food packs, drinking water, hygiene supplies, and first aid kits. A turnover ceremony was held in Pili, Camarines Sur, attended by DSWD Assistant Secretary for Regional Operations Paul Ledesma and DSWD Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio.

BingoPlus Foundation Executive Director Angela Camins-Wieneke said, “Our hearts go out to all the families affected by Typhoon Kristine. While the typhoon has passed, the loss of loved ones—many of whom were breadwinners—adds another burden to the journey of recovery.” Beneficiaries reported that the Php250,000 financial aid will help repair homes, support the education of orphaned children, and meet the daily needs of families.
