QC Government and SPARK Philippines Launch Initiative to Empower Women Entrepreneurs
The Quezon City government, in collaboration with SPARK! (Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran) Philippines, recently launched "The KITA Initiative" to further empower women entrepreneurs and highlight their essential contributions to the economy.
The launch event, held at Stonehouse Hotel, was graced by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, who served as one of the guest speakers. Also present were SPARK! Philippines Executive Director Maica Teves and Havas Ortega Executive Creative Director Angie Tijam-Tohid.
“With the launch of ‘The KITA Initiative,’ we are once again placing women at the core of our efforts to build a prosperous, just, and inclusive society,” Mayor Belmonte remarked. She reaffirmed the local government's commitment to creating an environment where women entrepreneurs can thrive.
Belmonte emphasized that the project could become a powerful tool for transforming women-led micro enterprises and creating a more inclusive ecosystem for female entrepreneurs.
Pilot Project to Transform Signage of Women-Managed Sari-Sari Stores
The initiative’s pilot project focuses on revamping the signage of sari-sari stores in the Kamuning area, which are predominantly managed by women. By redesigning their signs with the KITA font, the project aims to increase visibility and provide greater recognition for these businesses’ contributions to the local economy.
SPARK! Executive Director Maica Teves stressed the importance of advocacy, saying, “We must become advocates for ourselves, our sisters, our daughters, and every Filipina who dreams of a more equitable future. The path forward is clear: strategic collaboration and unwavering solidarity.”
Teves continued, “This project puts the spotlight on sari-sari store owners, bringing their businesses into focus.”
Expanding the KITA Initiative Nationwide
The KITA Initiative is not just about recognition; it’s about offering visibility, support, and appreciation to every Filipina entrepreneur. Havas Ortega’s Angie Tijam-Tohid shared, “It is only the beginning of ‘The KITA Initiative.’ Our vision is to unite more collaborators: women entrepreneurs, established and emerging brands, allies, and advocates. Through these partnerships, we can provide the mentorship, resources, networks, and funding to empower women and help them grow their businesses.”
In addition to Kamuning, the KITA Initiative plans to expand to other areas in Quezon City and across the country.
