Future Innovators Shine at the 10th Philippine Robothon & 2nd STEAM Education Conference
The future of technology and education in the Philippines was brought into sharp focus during the 10th Philippine Robothon and 2nd STEAM Education Conference.
Held recently at the National University – Nazareth School in Manila, the event was a resounding success, showcasing the brilliance and creativity of the country's brightest young innovators, passionate educators, and key advocates in robotics and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.
This landmark event was organized by First Eduspec Inc. (FEI), the Philippines' premier technology-focused education solutions provider, and Rex Education, the country's leading academic publisher. Together, they created an inspiring platform for young minds, educators, and experts to collaborate, innovate, and shape a technologically advanced future. Here’s a look back at some of the key moments and achievements from this incredible event.
The 10th Philippine Robothon: Where Innovation Meets Real-World Challenges
The 10th Philippine Robothon kicked off with great anticipation, under the theme "D.I.G.I.T.B.A.Y.A.N.: Pagyabong ng Kaalaman, Pag-angat ng Bayan," which translates to the growth of knowledge and the progress of the nation. This year, 138 teams from 38 schools across the country participated in two exciting categories: the Mini Robot Challenge and the Innovative Open Category.
Mini Robot Challenge: Addressing National Issues with Robotics
In the Mini Robot Challenge, teams were tasked with addressing the crucial national issue of food security. This challenge highlighted how technology and robotics can be used creatively to solve real-world problems. Students showcased their innovation, ingenuity, and problem-solving abilities as they designed robots that could help secure the nation’s food supply in an efficient and sustainable way.
Innovative Open Category: Rethinking Technology for a Better Future
The Innovative Open Category brought forth even more ambitious ideas, with participants tackling themes such as inclusive education, sustainable agriculture, disaster response, and artificial intelligence (AI) for business efficiency. In this category, students were invited to reimagine how technology could be leveraged to solve complex global and national challenges. It was a true testament to the unlimited potential of the younger generation to drive change through innovation.
Recognizing Excellence: Awarding the Brightest Minds
The awards ceremony, held at 2:00 PM, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the students and their teams. In the Innovative Open Category – Middle School, Elizabeth Seton School Las Piñas took home the top prize, with St. Mary’s College Inc., Quezon City and Elizabeth Seton School South securing second and third place, respectively.
In the Innovative Open Category – High School, San Beda College – Alabang emerged as the winner, with Brokenshire SOCCSKSARGEN and Immaculate Concepcion College, Balayan following in second and third place.
Meanwhile, Grace Christian School, Quezon City was crowned the overall winner in the Mini Robot Challenge, while GCF South Metro Christian School and Brokenshire College – Toril claimed the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.
The event culminated with the ceremonial turnover of the prestigious Philippine Robothon Emblem, marking the official handover of the 11th Philippine Robothon to University of San Agustin – Iloilo, a symbol of the continued legacy of innovation in robotics and education.
The 2nd STEAM Education Conference: Fostering Collaboration and Exploration
Parallel to the Robothon competition was the 2nd STEAM Education Conference, a dynamic event that gathered over 120 educators, school leaders, and industry experts. The conference, with its theme “STEAM for All – Coding & Robotics as Catalysts for PISA Success,” provided a unique platform to explore the future of education and its intersection with technology.
One of the most anticipated moments was the keynote address by Dr. Alfons Jayson Pelgone from the Philippine Normal University, who shared valuable insights on the transformative power of STEAM education. Following this, a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Paolo Josef Blando of the National Teachers College, delved into topics such as the integration of robotics into classrooms and its positive impact on student performance.
Esteemed panelists, including Dr. Cherrie Paniamogan of Brokenshire College – Toril, Dr. Claudette Paracale of the University of San Agustin – Iloilo, Ms. Maria Darin Tagbago and Ms. Eliana Katelyn Li of GCF South Metro Christian School, and Mr. Marc Justin Amurao of Dominican School of Manila, shared their perspectives on the future of education in a tech-driven world.
Additionally, Dr. Sarah Villanueva of FEI Research presented a compelling case study on Skills Assessment Programs, while Dr. Vanessa Paula Garcia of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation provided critical insights into quality assurance in education.
A Collective Effort for a Bright Future
The success of both events was made possible by the collaboration of various organizations. Along with First Eduspec Inc. and Rex Education, the event was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Education, and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, as well as private companies such as SamLabs, Elex Hub Electronics, Segway, and TornBox Creatives.
These gatherings showcased the incredible potential of Filipino students and educators, positioning them as leaders in the global movement toward a more technologically advanced and innovative future. Through initiatives like the Philippine Robothon and the STEAM Education Conference, the Philippines continues to build a stronger foundation for the next generation of innovators and advocates.
