Grab Philippines Marks Earth Day 2025 with Mangrove Planting in La Union
In celebration of Earth Day 2025, Grab Philippines has officially launched its environmental initiative,
the Green Programme, by planting the first 1,000 of 80,000 pledged mangrove trees in Dulao, La Union.Leading the launch were Greg Camacho, Director for Strategy at Grab Philippines, and Iris Chang, Grab’s Head of Group Sustainability. They were joined by driver-partners, employees, users, and local volunteers in a collaborative tree-planting event that sets the foundation for the newly established GrabForGood Forest.
What is the Grab Green Programme?
Launched in February 2025, the Grab Green Programme allows users to directly support sustainability efforts through micro-contributions. By toggling the Green option in the Grab app, passengers and customers can donate PHP 2 for every GrabCar ride and PHP 1 for every GrabFood or GrabMart order, funding climate-positive projects like mangrove planting.
Introducing the GrabForGood Forest in Dulao
A flagship initiative under this program, the GrabForGood Forest is a five-hectare mangrove restoration project located in Dulao, a coastal barangay in La Union. The project is made possible through partnerships with:
- FEED (Fostering Education and Environment for Development)
- Dulao Fishpond and Fishpen Producer’s Cooperative
- EcoMatcher, a sustainability tech platform
- Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU)
These partners are collectively implementing the “Ridge to Reef (R2R)” strategy to protect the area from rising sea levels and extreme weather, while also strengthening food and water security for the local fishing community.
Empowering Local Communities Through Sustainability
The mangrove-planting event was a grassroots effort, involving not only Grab stakeholders but also local families and cooperative members. Attendees received training on proper planting techniques and learned about the broader environmental benefits of mangrove ecosystems.
Delailah Lacadue, head of the Dulao Fishpond and Fishpen Producer’s Cooperative, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“This project is more than tree planting — it’s a lifeline for our community. We thank Grab, FEED, DMMMSU, and EcoMatcher for their commitment to protecting our coastline and supporting our livelihoods. We stand united in caring for nature for future generations.”
Transparency and Impact: Tree Tracking with EcoMatcher
To ensure accountability and allow users to see the impact of their contributions, Grab has partnered with EcoMatcher, which provides tree tracking technology. Users can monitor tree growth and location, enhancing transparency and engagement.
EcoMatcher CEO Bas Fransen shared, “Transparency is vital in sustainability. With Grab’s Green Programme, we can offer Filipino consumers a direct, traceable way to support reforestation and climate action.”
Looking Ahead: A Greener Future, One Ride at a Time
This first planting milestone reflects Grab’s long-term vision of embedding environmental responsibility into everyday actions. With strong participation from its user base, Grab Philippines plans to expand the Green Programme to more regions, scaling up its environmental and social impact.
Greg Camacho emphasized, “The beauty of the Green Programme lies in its simplicity. With small, everyday choices, our users are creating real change for communities like Dulao. This mangrove planting is just the beginning.”
