Harnessing Solar Power: SM Prime’s Commitment to Sustainable Energy in the Philippines
Imagine a world powered by the sun—the ultimate, renewable source of life. As climate change intensifies due to fossil fuel use, the need for sustainable energy alternatives has never been more urgent.
The Philippines, blessed with abundant sunlight, is uniquely positioned to harness solar power and help combat the effects of climate change. In 2024, Manila enjoyed approximately 4,440 hours of daylight, showcasing the vast potential for solar energy production in the region.
Recognizing this potential early on, SM Prime took action. In 2014, SM North EDSA became the first commercial property in the Philippines to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its roof, marking the largest solar installation in Southeast Asia at the time. This pioneering effort signaled the beginning of SM Prime’s long-term commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
According to SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, “SM’s environmental sustainability journey began with energy and water conservation. By revolutionizing our malls’ energy efficiency through renewable energy, we amplify our responsibility to both people and the planet.”
Today, SM Supermalls operates 44 malls equipped with solar PV systems, generating a combined peak energy capacity of 51.6 megawatts (MW). The largest installation is located at SM City Santa Rosa. With a total of 96,000 solar panels spread across malls in Luzon and Visayas, SM Prime now holds the Philippines’ largest solar energy portfolio, covering approximately 33 hectares. These efforts are integral to the company’s ambitious Net Zero by 2040 strategy, which aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
The 51.6 MW capacity of SM Prime’s solar installations plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, powering thousands of homes, and even removing thousands of cars from the roads. Additionally, it decreases the demand for coal, providing environmental benefits for both local communities and the planet at large.
This solar energy directly powers vital mall operations, such as lighting and escalators, which reduces SM Supermalls' reliance on the national grid. As a result, this not only helps stabilize the power supply but also eases the burden on electricity providers, mitigating the risk of power outages. By embracing clean, renewable energy, SM Prime is contributing to a more sustainable future for the Philippines.
But SM Prime’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond solar energy. The company is also focused on waste management, water conservation, and air quality initiatives—all designed to minimize its environmental impact. Through these comprehensive sustainability efforts, SM Prime is making a positive difference while fostering responsible and innovative business practices.
In conclusion, SM Prime’s large-scale adoption of solar PV systems, along with its broader environmental initiatives, underscores its dedication to a sustainable future for the Philippines. As a leader in renewable energy and sustainability, SM Prime is helping pave the way toward a cleaner, greener, and brighter tomorrow.
