SM and BFP Mark Fire Prevention Month with Empowering 'Women on Fire' Initiative
In honor of Fire Prevention Month and National Women’s Month, SM Cares, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), hosted the 4th SM & BFP Nationwide Simultaneous Fire Drill on March 4, 2025.
This year’s event featured a unique twist, launching the Women on Fire campaign, which highlighted the leadership, strength, and resilience of women in fire prevention, disaster response, and community safety.
Held at SM Mall of Asia with simultaneous drills conducted at all SM malls nationwide, this initiative underscored SM Cares' ongoing commitment to disaster preparedness, safety, and gender inclusivity in fire prevention efforts.
A Symbol of Strength: The Venus Symbol Formed by 180 Fire Trucks
To mark the celebration of both Fire Prevention Month and Women’s Month, the MOA Complex came alive with a breathtaking display as 180 fire trucks came together to form the iconic Venus Symbol. This visually stunning formation symbolized the empowerment of women in the field of fire safety and disaster response.
"Women on Fire": A Tribute to Women in Fire Safety
The launch of Women on Fire during the event was a powerful moment to honor women in firefighting, emergency response, and safety advocacy. Through a series of forums, educational exhibits, and leadership discussions, the campaign celebrated female firefighters and emergency responders who have made significant contributions to disaster resilience and safety.
Atty. Pearly Joan Turley, Senior Assistant Vice President of the Corporate Compliance Group and SM Cares Program Director for Women & Breastfeeding Mothers, shared her thoughts on the initiative: “Women have always played a vital role in ensuring safety. Through ‘Women on Fire,’ we recognize their contributions and reinforce the importance of gender-inclusive fire prevention efforts.” This sentiment echoed across the event as female firefighters led the fire drill, showcasing their vital role in fire prevention and disaster response.
Strengthening Preparedness: The Nationwide Fire Drill
This year’s nationwide fire drill was more than just an exercise; it was an essential event for reinforcing community preparedness. Simulating real-life fire scenarios, participants—including BFP personnel, SM employees, mall tenants, students, and local stakeholders—were trained in evacuation procedures, fire suppression techniques, and emergency coordination.
As Fire Chief Superintendent Jesus Fernandez, CESE, Officer-in-Charge of the Bureau of Fire Protection, remarked, “Fire prevention is not just about drills—it’s about building a culture of preparedness. Through this initiative, we are equipping our community with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to ensure safety and protection when the need arises.”
A Lasting Commitment to Safety and Inclusivity
While the March 4 event marked a significant milestone, the Women on Fire initiative is far from over. SM Supermalls, together with BFP, is committed to continuing the campaign throughout the year, expanding safety awareness programs, conducting training sessions, and promoting community engagement.
The focus will remain on fire safety education, workplace safety initiatives, and inclusive disaster preparedness training—ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender, is equipped with the skills and knowledge to stay safe in emergencies.
