Knauf and DSWD Join Forces to Elevate Skills and Livelihood of Filipino Construction Workers

Knauf Gypsum Philippines, Inc. and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office IV-A CALABARZON have officially launched a partnership aimed at enhancing the skills and opportunities for construction workers in the region.

The formal signing ceremony took place at the Knauf Training Academy in Libis, Quezon City, marking a significant milestone in collaborative efforts to support Filipino workers.

The partnership is anchored on Republic Act 11310, also known as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Act, a national initiative that focuses on poverty reduction and human capital development. By aligning with this law, Knauf and DSWD are translating policy into tangible opportunities for workers to upskill, gain employment, and improve their livelihoods.

Opening Doors for Every Aspiring Worker

The joint training program is designed to accommodate both seasoned construction workers looking to enhance their skills and individuals with little or no prior experience in the field. “Our goal is to provide skills training for the region’s construction workers. Through this partnership, anyone 18 and above who wants to learn and develop a skill can be trained,” said Mark Dewey Sergio, Managing Director of Knauf Gypsum Philippines.

“The partnership isn’t just about teaching skills, it’s about empowering individuals, creating opportunities, and building a path out of poverty,” he added.

Knauf Academy: Shaping Skilled Filipino Workers

The Knauf Academy, established in June 2022 in Libis, Quezon City, leads this initiative by providing hands-on training in gypsum board installation and jointing techniques. Since its inception, nearly 850 workers have graduated from its programs, gaining expertise that sets them apart in the construction industry.

“Lightweight construction is our focus because it benefits the Philippines. In a tropical, earthquake-prone country, this method improves flexibility, functionality, and safety of structures,” explained Sergio. “It’s like combining the lightweight design of the bahay kubo with modern construction techniques for safer and more durable buildings.”

Knauf Academy’s dual mission is clear: enhance workers’ technical skills and increase employment opportunities. For those already employed, training opens doors to promotions and advanced roles. For unemployed individuals, the academy provides the tools needed to enter the workforce and connects them directly with partner contractors for job placements.

K-Trabaho: Turning Skills Into Jobs

To bridge the gap between training and employment, Knauf launched K-Trabaho, a job fair that matches academy graduates with contractors in need of skilled labor. At a recent K-Trabaho event, 70 trainees were successfully connected to Multi-Development and Construction Corporation (MDCC), giving them immediate access to meaningful work.

Expanding the Reach

Knauf’s vision extends beyond CALABARZON. The company aims to impact over 45,000 construction workers nationwide by establishing additional training centers and deploying mobile training units to reach remote communities, ensuring inclusive access to skills development.

The partnership between Knauf Gypsum Philippines and DSWD exemplifies the power of corporate social responsibility when paired with government initiatives. By empowering workers, creating opportunities, and improving livelihoods, this collaboration is helping shape a stronger, more skilled, and inclusive construction industry in the Philippines.
