SM Prime Leads the Charge Toward a Decarbonized Future for Malls

As the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) takes place in Belem, Brazil this November, the urgency to address climate change has never been greater.

For SM Prime Holdings, Inc., this urgency translates into a bold commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040. This goal drives the company to strengthen implementation, foster meaningful partnerships, and build collective resilience across its mall portfolio.

Strong Partnerships for Sustainable Growth

SM Prime recognizes that the challenges of security, affordability, and sustainability—often called the energy trilemma—are especially critical in property development and urban planning. To address this, the company has forged strategic partnerships with renewable energy leaders to expand clean energy capacity, drive innovation, and accelerate the shift to a low-carbon future.

By adopting a comprehensive energy mix, SM Prime supports renewable energy producers, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthens the sustainability of its mall operations. SM Supermalls has already achieved over 50 percent renewable energy usage across its portfolio, thanks to collaborations with key renewable energy players and direct energy procurement.

Investments in emerging technologies further reflect SM Prime’s commitment. In 2022, a partnership with Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. laid the foundation for strategic energy plans. By 2024, the renewable energy footprint expanded with TotalEnergies, and in 2025, Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation joined efforts to enhance on-site solar generation. Continuous growth of rooftop solar installations across SM Supermalls ensures cleaner, energy-efficient, and more resilient malls for communities nationwide.

Empowering Communities Through Clean Energy

SM Prime’s renewable energy initiatives do more than reduce emissions. They contribute to climate-smart urban development, strengthen community resilience, and make renewable energy an accessible and strategic asset for businesses. These efforts align with the SM Green Movement, which promotes energy-efficient living, sustainable urban spaces, and improved quality of life for local communities.

“Energy efficiency has been part of our journey since the 1990s,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “It allows us to maximize energy use, reduce operational costs, and lower emissions while providing enjoyable mall experiences. We still have a long way to go, but our goal is to make renewable energy accessible at scale. This creates value for the communities we serve and ensures safer, sustainable spaces for everyone.”
