Igloo and Angkas Bring Affordable Insurance Protection to 20000 Motorcycle Taxi Riders in the Philippines
Regional insurtech leader Igloo has teamed up with Angkas, the Philippines’ largest motorcycle ride hailing platform, to provide affordable insurance coverage for more than 20000 riders nationwide.
The partnership strengthens rider safety and financial protection at a time when motorcycle taxis play a vital role in everyday urban transport.Motorcycle ride hailing has become an essential solution for millions of Filipinos navigating congested cities and a fragmented public transportation system. As demand continues to grow, the sector is projected to generate up to USD 1 billion in revenue by 2030. Despite this rapid expansion, many riders remain financially vulnerable, often lacking access to insurance that can help cover accidents and unexpected medical costs.
This protection gap has gained national attention. The Philippine Insurance Commission recently issued a draft circular proposing Passenger Personal Accident Insurance coverage for motorcycle taxis, highlighting the urgent need to safeguard both riders and passengers in the growing mobility economy.
Angkas currently serves over 11 million app users and works with more than 20000 registered riders across the country. Through its partnership with Igloo, Angkas riders are automatically enrolled in Personal Accident insurance plans while completing rides on the platform. The coverage extends to both riders and passengers, providing peace of mind every time a trip is booked.
“This partnership is about meeting riders where they are and making insurance part of their everyday work life,” said Raunak Mehta, Co founder and CEO of Igloo. “By embedding affordable protection directly into the Angkas platform, we are closing a critical gap and helping riders stay financially secure when accidents happen.”
For a minimum premium of just 52 cents per ride, both riders and passengers receive personal accident coverage of up to PHP 650000, along with medical benefits of up to PHP 200000. The plan also includes access to a private ambulance service at no additional cost, offering timely support in emergency situations.
Angeline Tham, Founder of Angkas, emphasized the importance of rider welfare. “Our riders are the backbone of Angkas. Their safety has always been our top priority, and this partnership allows us to support them in a more meaningful way. Working with Igloo enables us to provide accessible insurance that protects our riders and reinforces the trust millions of Filipinos place in Angkas every day.”
The collaboration reflects Igloo’s broader mission to make insurance inclusive and accessible across Southeast Asia. By integrating coverage into digital platforms used daily by gig workers, Igloo continues to help underserved communities gain protection and build resilience, while promoting safer and more secure commutes throughout the region.
