European Organic Standards Fuel Growth of Sustainable Food Systems in the Philippines
Naturland e.V., a leading global association for organic agriculture, highlighted the rising impact of European organic standards in promoting sustainable food systems during the 10th Philippine Sustainability Movement, with support from the European Union (EU).
“Choosing organic means choosing a system that respects people, animals, and the planet,” said Alexandra Castillo, Philippines Coordinator for Promotions and Market Linkages at Naturland e.V. “Organic practices protect the soil and water that sustain us, while ensuring safe, healthy food for everyone today and in the future. Together with our partners, we work across the value chain to turn these standards into everyday practice and support a shift toward more sustainable food systems.”
Organic farming not only safeguards animal welfare and biodiversity but also champions environmental responsibility. Europe’s rigorous regulations and inspection processes set some of the world’s highest benchmarks for organic certification. These standards provide practical pathways for sustainability throughout the food value chain from farmers and suppliers to restaurants and consumers.
Naturland emphasized that the growing organic movement also opens new opportunities for businesses, especially hotels, restaurants, and retailers. Offering certified organic products allows them to connect with consumers who value food safety, quality, and origin, while building trust through transparency and traceability. The EU Organic Logo and the Naturland seal serve as reliable markers of responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.
Efforts to expand organic adoption in the Philippines include Naturland’s “European Organic: Nurturing Every Juan” campaign, supported by the EU, which aims to make European organic products accessible and part of daily life for Filipino consumers.
The 10th Philippine Sustainability Movement, co-organized by Naturland and Pristine Solutions, continues to unite sustainability advocates from hospitality, culinary, business, development, and public sectors. Partners like PYC Foods and One World Deli joined to advance responsible practices across the country’s food and hospitality industries. Over the past decade, the movement has successfully raised awareness and encouraged sustainable adoption, creating momentum toward resilient, transparent, and accountable food systems.
