Thriving with Diabetes: How Filipinos Can Take Control of Their Health
So what happens when you’re diagnosed with diabetes?
Does life suddenly become harder? Many Filipinos face these questions, often filled with uncertainty and worry. While diabetes is a serious chronic condition, it doesn’t have to define your life. With the right approach, Filipinos can manage their health and thrive.Diabetes in the Philippines: A Growing Concern
Diabetes affects millions of Filipinos. According to the Department of Health (DOH), about 4.3 million people in the country are living with diabetes, making it one of the leading causes of death. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that diabetes contributes to roughly 1.5 million deaths each year, with prevalence steadily rising in the Western Pacific Region, including the Philippines.
While these statistics may seem alarming, they also highlight an important truth: diabetes is manageable. With proper guidance, timely medical consultation, and the right treatment, a fulfilling life is possible even after a diagnosis.
Focus on Living Well
The Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM) emphasizes that managing diabetes doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes overnight. Through their IWAS: 4Dapat Diabetes Campaign, PCEDM outlines four essential steps:
- Ikonsulta sa doktor – Seek early medical advice
- Wastong pagkain – Maintain a balanced, diabetes-friendly diet
- Aktibong pamumuhay – Stay physically active
- Sapat at angkop na gamot – Follow prescribed medication faithfully
By integrating these habits into daily life, individuals can maintain better blood sugar control and significantly improve overall quality of life.
TGP and PCEDM Join Forces
To make diabetes education more accessible across the country, The Generics Pharmacy (TGP) has partnered with PCEDM. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed by TGP Deputy General Manager Aileen Natividad and PCEDM President Dr. Lora May Tan-Tin Hay, combines TGP’s nationwide retail and community network with PCEDM’s medical expertise.
“This partnership reinforces our mission to make healthcare more accessible and reliable for every Filipino. By working hand-in-hand with PCEDM, we aim to turn awareness into action when it comes to diabetes,” said Natividad.
Dr. Tan-Tin Hay added, “Life after a diabetes diagnosis can still be full of hope and possibilities. With proper care, education, and support, Filipinos can lead healthier, more active lives.”
Bringing Awareness to Communities
The collaboration will roll out nationwide initiatives across digital platforms, retail outlets, and on-the-ground community programs. Activities include expert-led talks, health engagements, and social media campaigns to empower Filipinos with knowledge and practical tools to manage diabetes effectively.
Launching on World Diabetes Day, November 14, this campaign encourages Filipinos to take charge of their health and embrace a proactive, informed approach to living with diabetes.
With the right guidance, lifestyle adjustments, and community support, diabetes doesn’t have to limit life. Instead, it can be an opportunity to live healthier, more mindful, and more empowered.
