Manulife Unveils Global Longevity Institute with a Bold 350 Million Commitment to Transform Lifelong Health and Financial Security
Manulife has officially introduced its Global Longevity Institute
, a major initiative backed by a USD 350 million commitment through 2030, aimed at advancing lifelong health, well-being, and financial resilience. Positioned as a global platform for research, innovation, and community partnerships, the Institute seeks to reshape how people live, work, learn, and age across every stage of life.A Global Effort to Bridge the Gap Between Lifespan and Healthspan
While people around the world are living longer, many spend up to 20 percent of their lives in poor health, and nearly 40 percent face financial instability as they age. Manulife aims to close this gap by advancing solutions that help individuals stay healthy and financially confident throughout their extended lifetimes.
“As a company deeply rooted in health, wealth, and long-term protection, we see an incredible opportunity to help people thrive at any age,” said Phil Witherington, President and CEO of Manulife. “The Longevity Institute will elevate research, foster innovation, and build partnerships that enable people to live longer, healthier, and better lives.”
A Strategic Focus on Research, Innovation, and Global Impact
The Longevity Institute will work across three core areas:
- Global research and thought leadership to better understand how longer lives can be lived well.
- Innovation and advocacy that promote health readiness, financial resilience, and well-being.
- Community investment to advance equitable access to longevity-enhancing knowledge and tools.
In Asia, where one in four people will be over 60 by 2050, this work is especially critical. “We need to rethink traditional models of financial planning, health care, and workforce participation,” said Steve Finch, President and CEO of Manulife Asia. “Our goal is to support healthy aging and long-term financial stability so people can truly live better for longer.”
Key Initiatives Driving Longevity Forward
Manulife’s commitment to public well-being dates back to 1888, and the launch of the Longevity Institute builds on that legacy with several new and ongoing initiatives:
Partnership with the National Institute on Ageing
Manulife is funding the Ageing in Canada Survey, which examines the real-life experiences of adults 50+ to help shape policies that promote healthy aging and improved quality of life.
Collaboration with the Milken Institute
Through joint research initiatives, including Feeding Change and the Longevity Ready report, Manulife supports innovative approaches to healthy aging, food-as-medicine models, and community-based solutions that enable people to remain well in their homes.
Global Longevity Symposiums
What began as a Boston-based event has now expanded worldwide. Manulife Singapore and Manulife Philippines recently hosted their first symposiums, bringing together medical experts, industry leaders, and customers for conversations on living longer and living better. John Hancock will host its next U.S. symposium in April 2026.
Longevity Preparedness Index
Developed with MIT AgeLab, this index measures how prepared Americans are to navigate longer lives. The index will soon extend to Canada, offering valuable insights into emerging needs and opportunities in longevity innovation.
Driving Better Health and Greater Financial Confidence for Millions
With over 36 million customers worldwide, Manulife plans to amplify its impact through the Longevity Institute by supporting two primary outcomes:
Health
Helping individuals make sustainable, everyday choices that support physical, mental, and emotional well-being, through nutrition, early detection, accessible movement, and practical mental health support.
Wealth
Giving people the confidence to build lasting financial security, supported by education, tools, and guidance to navigate both opportunities and uncertainties throughout life.
A full list of the Institute’s programs and partners is available in the official fact sheet. In the U.S., the initiative will operate under the name John Hancock Longevity Institute.
