Brave Tails Brings Hope to Trauma Survivors Through the Human Animal Bond in the Philippines

Sometimes, the path toward healing begins with a quiet moment of connection.

A gentle dog, a calm presence, and a safe environment can offer comfort to someone navigating difficult emotions. While animals are not a substitute for professional mental health care, their ability to foster connection and emotional support has inspired new approaches to human well being.

In the Philippines, a pioneering initiative called Brave Tails is bringing this possibility into focus. Developed by the Philippine Human Animal Bond Institute (PHABI), the nonprofit organization behind Communitails, the program has received a grant from the Royal Canin Foundation to advance trauma informed animal assisted services for trauma survivors and the people who care for them.

The recognition marks a historic milestone: Brave Tails is the first initiative from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to receive support from the Royal Canin Foundation's Global Foundation program.

More than a milestone for local advocacy, the grant represents an opportunity to strengthen responsible, professionally guided approaches that recognize the connection between people and animals as a potential source of support, resilience, and well being.

To introduce the initiative and encourage broader conversations about the role of pets in human health, Royal Canin Philippines hosted In Good Company with Communitails at the Royal Canin Educational Hub. The gathering brought together members of the media, advocates, and partners to discuss the Foundation's mission, the planned implementation of Brave Tails, and the safeguards needed to ensure that animal assisted services benefit both people and animals.

Brave Tails Addresses the Emotional Needs of Trauma Survivors and Care Providers

Healing after trauma is rarely a straightforward journey. Survivors of abuse and exploitation may face lasting emotional and psychological challenges, while access to appropriate mental health support can remain limited. The people who stand beside them, including caregivers and frontline professionals, can also experience emotional exhaustion, burnout, and secondary trauma.

These realities underscore the need for compassionate, carefully designed support systems that consider the well being of both survivors and their care networks.

Through Communitails, Brave Tails aims to help address these needs by developing structured animal assisted services grounded in trauma informed principles. The initiative recognizes the human animal bond as a potential complement to broader support services, creating opportunities for safe, guided interactions with specially trained therapy dogs.

At the heart of the program are trained Human Animal Teams, composed of therapy dogs and the human professionals who work alongside them. Rather than relying on informal interactions alone, the program is being developed around preparation, participant screening, informed consent, safety protocols, and appropriate animal welfare measures.

These safeguards are central to ensuring that each interaction respects individual needs, personal boundaries, and the comfort of participating dogs.

“What we're building through Brave Tails is not simply a series of interactions between people and dogs. It's a structured, trauma informed approach designed around trained Human Animal Teams, participant safety, informed consent, and animal welfare. Through the Foundation's support, we're able to strengthen this work thoughtfully and responsibly.” Dr. Ginger Ramirez, Co Founder of the Philippine Human Animal Bond Institute

By combining professional guidance with responsible animal assisted practices, Brave Tails seeks to contribute to a more compassionate and informed approach to supporting people affected by trauma.

Putting Safety, Choice, and Compassion at the Center of Care

For trauma survivors, feeling safe and having control over personal decisions are essential considerations. No two people respond to difficult experiences in the same way, and support programs must respect individual circumstances, preferences, and comfort levels.

This principle informs the partnership between Communitails and The Paper Project, Inc., an organization that works closely with communities affected by trauma and adversity.

Through this collaboration, Communitails is drawing on community based insights to help shape Brave Tails around the needs of the people it hopes to support. The partnership reinforces the importance of thoughtful preparation, voluntary participation, and an approach that places dignity and safety at the forefront.

“The people and communities we work with come with different experiences, needs, and levels of comfort. That's why support needs to be grounded in safety, consent, choice, and appropriate preparation. What stands out about Brave Tails is its commitment to combining compassion with structure, ensuring that both people and animals are supported responsibly throughout the experience.” Atty. Lawrence Aritao, Co Founder of The Paper Project, Inc.

This shared commitment reflects a fundamental principle of trauma informed care: meaningful support begins with listening, respecting boundaries, and creating conditions in which people can participate at their own pace.

It also recognizes that responsible animal assisted services require more than good intentions. They depend on trained professionals, appropriate program design, ongoing assessment, and a consistent commitment to the welfare of every participating animal.

Royal Canin Foundation Expands Its Global Commitment to Human and Animal Well Being

The Royal Canin Foundation supports expert led initiatives around the world that demonstrate the positive role of cats and dogs in human health and welfare. It also supports initiatives that strengthen the work of search and rescue dogs.

Established to help advance meaningful, locally driven projects, the Foundation evaluates potential initiatives through a rigorous review process that considers their anticipated impact, feasibility, sustainability, and commitment to animal welfare.

In 2026, its supported initiatives span a range of human health needs and care settings. These include programs serving war affected communities in Ukraine, therapeutic interventions for older adults in Spain, and cat assisted therapy for hospitalized children in Italy.

Brave Tails now joins this international group of initiatives, bringing a Philippine led approach to the global conversation about animal assisted services.

Its selection highlights the potential for locally developed programs to contribute to human health and well being while responding to the specific needs of their communities. It also places a spotlight on the growing role of collaboration among nonprofit organizations, care providers, animal welfare advocates, and industry partners.

For the Philippines, the grant is an important step toward strengthening local expertise and developing responsible practices for animal assisted services. With support from the Royal Canin Foundation, Communitails can build on its existing relationships and knowledge of local communities as it prepares to implement Brave Tails.

Building a Responsible and Sustainable Animal Assisted Services Program

The Foundation's grant is intended to help PHABI expand Brave Tails to reach more trauma survivors and care providers, strengthen its trauma informed practices, and advance sustainable, evidence informed approaches to well being in the Philippines.

The work extends beyond the immediate implementation of the program. It also involves developing local capabilities, strengthening partnerships, and documenting lessons that may contribute to a better understanding of animal assisted services in the country.

Since receiving the Foundation's support, Communitails has continued preparing for Brave Tails through program planning, partner engagement, Human Animal Team development, and capability building activities. Over the planned two year period, the initiative intends to document its experiences and learnings to help inform future practice and strengthen local knowledge.

This commitment to learning and responsible implementation is particularly important as animal assisted services continue to develop in the Philippines. By documenting its approach and the lessons gained along the way, Brave Tails aims to contribute to a stronger foundation for future programs.

The initiative also recognizes that the welfare of therapy dogs must remain a priority throughout every stage of implementation.

During the In Good Company with Communitails gathering, participating dogs were discussed as members of trained Human Animal Teams rather than simply as tools for therapeutic activities. Their health, comfort, rest, and overall well being are supported through safeguards designed to ensure that their involvement remains appropriate and responsible.

This approach reflects the principle that the human animal bond should benefit both sides of the relationship.

“What stood out throughout today's conversations is that meaningful impact requires both compassion and structure. Brave Tails brings together expert implementation, responsible animal welfare, and strong community partnerships in a way that reflects what the Royal Canin Foundation hopes to support around the world. We're proud to help enable work that benefits people while ensuring the well being of pets remains at the center.” Gerard Poa, Country Head of Royal Canin Philippines

A Continuing Partnership for People, Pets, and Communities

The collaboration behind Brave Tails builds on the continuing relationship between Royal Canin Philippines and Communitails. Both organizations share an interest in responsible pet care, community well being, and public education about the role animals can play in society.

Their previous initiatives have included storybook reading programs and community education activities that encourage empathy, promote responsible pet ownership, and strengthen understanding of the relationship between people and animals.

With Brave Tails, this collaboration takes another step toward supporting vulnerable communities through a carefully developed, locally led initiative.

The involvement of The Paper Project, Inc. further strengthens the program's community centered approach, helping connect program planning with the realities faced by people affected by trauma and adversity.

Together, the Royal Canin Foundation, Communitails, The Paper Project, Inc., and their partners are working toward a shared goal: advancing approaches that respect human needs, uphold animal welfare, and create opportunities for meaningful, sustainable impact.

A New Chapter for Human Animal Bond Initiatives in the Philippines

The recognition of Brave Tails by the Royal Canin Foundation is more than an international achievement. It represents an opportunity to strengthen local expertise, build responsible animal assisted services, and contribute to a more informed understanding of how the human animal bond may support well being.

For trauma survivors, care providers, and the communities that support them, the initiative offers a carefully structured approach that places safety, choice, and dignity at the center of participation.

For participating therapy dogs, it reinforces the importance of training, appropriate care, and welfare safeguards.

And for the Philippines, it marks an important step in bringing locally led animal assisted initiatives into a broader global conversation about human health and welfare.

Through Brave Tails, Communitails and its partners are working to build a future in which compassion is supported by professional expertise, community collaboration, and responsible care for every person and animal involved.

The goal is not simply to bring people and dogs together. It is to build the conditions in which that connection can be approached thoughtfully, safely, and responsibly, with the well being of both at its heart.
