Okada Manila Turns Rescued Food Into 8,480 Meals for Communities in Need
Resort saves more than two tonnes of food from January to September 2026, then serves 250 freshly prepared meals in Sta. Ana, Manila, for World Food Day
Every rescued ingredient can make a difference, especially when it finds its way to a table where a meal is needed most. For Okada Manila, reducing food waste is more than a sustainability commitment. It is an opportunity to nourish communities, support people in need, and extend the spirit of Filipino hospitality beyond the resort.
Through its ongoing partnership with Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines, Okada Manila rescued and donated 2,019 kilograms of food from January to September 2026, equivalent to approximately 8,480 meals. The initiative also helped prevent an estimated 5,108 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions associated with food waste.
The resort took this commitment a step further in celebration of World Food Day by preparing and distributing 250 meals to beneficiaries in Sta. Ana, Manila, through its Food Rescue Kitchen Program.
From Food Rescue to Meals That Matter
At the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Abandoned in Sta. Ana, Manila, Okada Manila team members joined SOS Philippines in turning a shared commitment into meaningful action.
Led by the resort's Food and Beverage Division, team members worked together to prepare ingredients, cook meals, pack food, and distribute servings to people experiencing homelessness and persons deprived of liberty from Precinct Station 6 in Sta. Ana.
Beyond preparing and serving meals, the team also helped clean the kitchen after the activity. Every step reflected a collective effort to ensure that food could serve a greater purpose while bringing practical support to people in the community.
For Okada Manila, the World Food Day initiative demonstrated how responsible food management can go hand in hand with compassion. What might otherwise have gone to waste became part of an effort to provide nourishment and remind beneficiaries that their communities care.
Making Sustainability Part of Everyday Hospitality
Okada Manila's food rescue partnership with SOS Philippines reflects a broader belief that hospitality should extend beyond welcoming guests through its doors. It also means making a positive difference in the lives of people who need support.
“Hospitality is ultimately about caring for people, and we believe that responsibility can extend beyond the resort. Through our partnership with SOS Philippines, rescued food can help provide meals to communities that need them. Seeing our team members prepare and distribute these meals in Sta. Ana brings that commitment to life and makes community support part of how we practice hospitality,” said Mr. Andreas Balla, Vice President of the Food and Beverage Division.
This commitment is also reflected in Okada Green Heart, the resort's sustainability initiative, particularly its Talent and Community pillar. By encouraging team members to participate directly in community outreach, Okada Manila connects its environmental efforts with the people who benefit from them.
The initiative shows how sustainability can become a shared responsibility, with employees contributing their time and skills to reduce food waste while helping address community needs.
Extending Support to More Communities Across Metro Manila
The partnership with SOS Philippines has reached several communities through Okada Manila's continuing food donations and food rescue activities.
Beneficiaries have included residents of Malambing, Pook Malinis, and Project PEARLS Batia, as well as persons deprived of liberty at Camp Karingal. Other food rescue activities during the year took place at the Guadalupe Viejo Community Complex in Makati City and Universidad de Manila.
Each initiative contributes to a larger effort to redirect usable food toward people who can benefit from it. By working with SOS Philippines, Okada Manila helps connect food recovery with community distribution, making responsible resource management a source of direct social support.
The 250 meals served in Sta. Ana for World Food Day build on these ongoing efforts, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in addressing food waste and supporting vulnerable communities.
A More Thoughtful Approach to Food and Community Care
As food waste remains an important sustainability concern, initiatives that recover surplus food can help make better use of available resources while supporting communities facing food insecurity.
For Okada Manila, the partnership with SOS Philippines brings this approach to life through measurable results, employee participation, and continued community engagement. The 2,019 kilograms of rescued food and 8,480 meal equivalents recorded from January to September 2026 demonstrate the potential of food recovery to create benefits beyond the kitchen.
More importantly, the initiative reflects a commitment to making hospitality meaningful not only for guests but also for the wider community.
Through Okada Green Heart and its continuing collaboration with SOS Philippines, Okada Manila remains committed to reducing food waste, supporting community well-being, and putting care into action.
