Filipino Women Lead in GenAI Course Completion According to New Coursera Report

Filipino women are proving their determination in the rapidly evolving field of generative artificial intelligence.

A new report from Coursera reveals that women learners in the Philippines are completing GenAI courses at slightly higher rates than men, highlighting their strong persistence once they gain access to learning opportunities.

The report titled One Year Later The Gender Gap in GenAI shows that Filipino women finished GenAI courses at rates 0.3 percent higher than men, even though they remain underrepresented in overall enrollments. The findings suggest that the biggest challenge is not motivation or capability, but access to high quality AI education.

Women Still Underrepresented but Participation Is Growing

In 2025, women accounted for 39.1 percent of GenAI course enrollments in the Philippines, up from 38.4 percent in 2024. While the increase may seem modest, it signals steady progress in narrowing the gender gap in AI learning.

Once women enroll, their slightly higher completion rates show a strong commitment to finishing courses and building new skills. This pattern suggests that expanding access to AI education could significantly increase women’s participation in the country’s growing digital economy.

The Philippines already stands out globally in gender equality. According to the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2025, the country ranks 20th worldwide, reflecting strong progress in education and economic participation for women.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries and jobs, ensuring equal access to AI skills will be essential for maintaining that momentum.

Beginner Friendly AI Courses Attract More Women

The report highlights that practical and beginner friendly courses tend to attract higher participation among women learners.

For example, a course on social media management offered by Meta has achieved 65.4 percent female enrollment in the Philippines. Courses that connect AI tools with real world applications such as productivity, education, and workplace tasks often see more balanced participation.

Rather than focusing heavily on complex technical theory, these programs show how generative AI can help people improve writing, teaching, communication, and creative work. This practical framing appears to make AI education more accessible and relevant to a wider audience.

According to Alexandra Urban, Learning Science Research Lead at Coursera, diversity plays a key role in shaping the future of AI.

She noted that when Filipino women gain access to GenAI education, they demonstrate strong dedication to mastering these emerging technologies. Expanding opportunities could unlock a vast pool of talent that will help drive innovation in the country.

Filipino Women Also Strengthening Critical Thinking Skills

Beyond technical AI skills, Filipino women are also investing in essential human capabilities that support responsible and effective AI use.

Women represent 46.5 percent of enrollments in critical thinking courses on the platform in the Philippines. This trend reflects a broader effort among female learners to combine technical knowledge with human centered skills, an increasingly important combination in the age of AI.

Critical thinking, communication, and problem solving help professionals apply generative AI tools more effectively across industries.

What This Means for the Philippines Digital Workforce

As the Philippines pushes forward with digital transformation and AI adoption, expanding inclusive access to AI education will be crucial for building a competitive workforce.

The report suggests several ways to support broader participation in AI learning:

  • Develop beginner level AI courses with clear real world applications
  • Promote inclusive teaching approaches and visible representation
  • Expand access through localization and partnerships
  • Combine GenAI training with human skills such as critical thinking

A year after Coursera first released its playbook on closing the GenAI gender gap, the latest data shows promising momentum in the Philippines.

Women are enrolling in AI courses in increasing numbers and completing them at even higher rates. With greater access to education and training, Filipino women could play an even larger role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence in the country and beyond.
