How One Campaign Is Helping Filipino Children Stay in School and Reach Their Dreams

Across the Philippines, millions of children are unable to complete their education.

Although public schooling is free, the everyday costs that come with it, like transportation, school supplies, and meals, often become too much for families to handle. As a result, many students are forced to drop out early, putting their future at risk.

Recognizing this urgent challenge, award-winning strategic marketing agency TeamAsia continues to strengthen its advocacy through My Dream in a Shoebox (MDIAS), a long-standing campaign dedicated to supporting children’s education and helping them build better futures.

A meaningful idea that continues to grow

What started 17 years ago as a simple shoebox donation drive has evolved into a nationwide effort to support young learners. These shoeboxes, now called “dream kits,” contain essential school supplies that help children stay prepared and motivated in school.

Over the years, MDIAS has expanded beyond providing materials. Through its Dream Scholarship Assistance Program, the initiative now offers financial support to students, along with donations and partnerships that extend its reach to more communities.

At its core, the campaign focuses on more than just giving—it aims to empower children to believe in their potential and pursue their ambitions without being limited by financial hardship.

Partnerships that create real impact

MDIAS continues to amplify its efforts by working with organizations that share the same goal of making education accessible. One of its key partners is Yellow Boat of Hope, a nonprofit that supports students in remote and underserved areas.

Together, they provide critical resources such as learning hubs equipped with computers, internet access, and educational tools, helping bridge the gap for students who lack access to technology.

In 2024, the campaign successfully funded an educational hub that included multiple computers, internet service, a printer, and learning materials. These resources now serve as a vital support system for students who need them most.

Beyond rural communities, MDIAS also reaches urban areas. In the past year, more than 5,000 dream kits were distributed nationwide, including hundreds given to children in Payatas, Quezon City through local partner organizations.

Stories that show the power of support

The true value of MDIAS is best seen in the lives it has helped shape.

One beneficiary, Charlotte Rosalijos, is now working in the logistics field after completing her studies. Inspired by a volunteer she met through the program, she chose to pursue accountancy and is now giving back by volunteering as well.

Her journey highlights how the right support at the right time can change the direction of a young person’s life and inspire them to help others along the way.

A shared mission for a better future

To date, My Dream in a Shoebox has impacted around 400,000 lives. As the campaign continues to grow, it calls on individuals, organizations, and communities to take part in supporting children’s education.

For those who want to contribute, a small donation can go a long way. Sponsoring a dream kit costs PHP350, while PHP3,000 can help cover a child’s school needs for an entire year. Donations for food programs and outreach efforts are also welcome.

More than just an initiative, MDIAS is a reminder that collective action can open doors for children and give them a real chance at success. By supporting education, we help create a future where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams.
