Digital Education Gets a Major Upgrade in Manila Through ChildFund’s Pro-Digital LOOP Project

ChildFund Philippines, in partnership with ChildFund Korea, the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Manila City Government, is transforming public education in the capital through the Pro-Digital LOOP Project. Launched in November 2023, this initiative upgrades ICT facilities in elementary schools, trains educators and families in safe digital practices, and supports the development of national child online safety policies.

Tackling Tech Gaps and Online Risks in Schools

The Pro-Digital LOOP Project addresses two critical issues: the lack of access to digital tools in public schools and the growing threats children face online. With the support of GEMS Heart Outreach Development Inc., the project has introduced advanced digital learning spaces in 10 public elementary schools across Manila.

Each school now features upgraded ICT hubs equipped with laptops, smart TVs, printers, air conditioning, and high-speed internet. Microsoft learning tools and applications were also distributed to support effective classroom use.

Real Results in the Classroom

Teachers and students are already seeing the benefits. Eremeo Monte, ICT Coordinator at Fernando Ma. Guerrero Elementary School, shared how digital access has changed learning:

“Students are more curious and engaged. Digital tools help them explore subjects more deeply and creatively.”

Empowering Teachers and Families

So far, over 346 educators, including teachers, principals, and ICT staff, have been trained in integrating technology into lessons. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 parents and caregivers have joined digital safety orientation sessions to support learning at home.

“The training gave us confidence to use technology effectively,” said Camille Villareal of Bagong Barangay Elementary School. “Our students are now more motivated, especially in math and science.”

“Community involvement is key,” added Carmela Conmigo of Beata Elementary School. “Together, we’re helping students stay safe while learning online.”

Strengthening Policy for Long-Term Impact

Beyond schools, the project is shaping policy. ChildFund and partners are working with tech companies like Meta and TikTok and collaborating with DepEd’s Learner Rights and Protection Bureau to update child protection policies, including online safety measures.

Minjin Kim, Country Program Manager at ChildFund Korea, highlighted the broader benefits:

“Teachers are more confident, and students are learning better. The interactive environment is transforming how schools teach and how children learn.”

Building a Safer, Smarter Future for Filipino Students

With over 6,000 students now using the upgraded ICT hubs, academic engagement is rising, dropout rates are falling, and families are more involved than ever.

“This project gave our students a real chance to succeed,” said Carol Salba, Principal at Bagong Barangay Elementary School. “They’re more motivated, and we’re seeing the results.”

By investing in digital learning and online child safety, the Pro-Digital LOOP Project is not only bridging the digital divide, it’s preparing Manila’s youth for a safer and smarter future.
