In an innovative approach to disaster education, Shell Pilipinas has partnered with the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST) to teach disaster preparedness to young Filipinos through a board game called Master of Disaster (MOD).

This unique initiative not only enhances awareness of natural disaster response but also fosters the Filipino value of bayanihan—community unity and cooperation.

Originally rolled out to over 81,000 students and 300 teachers, the program is now entering its second phase, expanding to 20 schools in Cagayan de Oro City. The interactive gameplay encourages teamwork, strategic thinking, and real-world disaster scenarios that help children understand how to react during emergencies.

“By empowering children with the knowledge and skills to navigate challenging situations, we can foster resilience within communities and better protect them during times of calamities,” said Serge Bernal, Shell Pilipinas Vice President for Corporate Relations.

Feedback from students and educators has been overwhelmingly positive. A student from Libjo Elementary School shared, “Playing MOD improves our social skills and teaches us to work together and escape disasters.” A teacher from Tabangao Elementary School added, “The MOD rollout was very interesting. It motivated the students to learn about disasters.”

Shell’s long-standing commitment to community safety and sustainable development continues through this educational initiative. By focusing on youth empowerment and proactive disaster education, Shell is helping to build a more resilient and disaster-ready Philippines.
