Why Watching Swan Lake with Your Kids Could Be the Most Magical Family Experience of 2025

If you have ever wondered whether your kids would enjoy watching a ballet performance, Ballet Manila’s 30th anniversary staging of Swan Lake is the perfect opportunity to find out.

This timeless production is returning to the stage with international stars and unforgettable storytelling, making it an ideal cultural experience for both parents and children.

As someone who has been meaning to take my kids to see Swan Lake, I was surprised by how much they already enjoy watching ballet. Not only do they stay focused through the entire performance, they are completely mesmerized by the music, movement, and drama that unfolds on stage. For many families, ballet is not just an adult experience anymore — and Swan Lake is the perfect place to start.

Ballet Manila Celebrates 30 Years with a Classic Masterpiece

Ballet Manila is marking its 30th anniversary with a special restaging of Swan Lake, one of the most beloved classical ballets in the world. Featuring a stellar cast from the San Francisco Ballet, this milestone event brings together international artistry and local talent in a rare and unforgettable way.

Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s CEO and artistic director, shared how meaningful this production is for the company. “Bringing this masterpiece to life for our 30th anniversary season is very monumental as it underscores Ballet Manila’s dedication to the highest standards of classical ballet.”

International Stars Return to the Manila Stage

The 2025 Swan Lake performances will feature a powerful mix of international and Filipino talent. On May 30 at 8 PM, May 31 at 5 PM, and June 1 at 5 PM, the dual roles of Odette and Odile will be performed by Katherine Barkman, first soloist of the San Francisco Ballet and former principal dancer of Ballet Manila. Barkman, once a student of Macuja Elizalde, returns to the company with grace and mastery.

Dancing opposite her is Esteban Hernandez, principal dancer of the San Francisco Ballet, whose dynamic performance as Prince Siegfried is expected to captivate audiences.

On May 31 and June 1 at 1 PM, matinee audiences will witness a fresh interpretation of the lead roles with Ballet Manila principal dancer Abigail Oliveiro and San Francisco Ballet soloist Nathaniel Remez. These performances highlight the collaboration between Filipino excellence and international prestige, creating a unique experience for local audiences.

A Beautiful Introduction to Ballet for Kids

Many parents worry their children will get bored watching ballet. But Swan Lake has long proven its ability to enchant audiences of all ages. With its magical storyline, hauntingly beautiful score by Tchaikovsky, and dramatic choreography, this ballet is a captivating introduction to the art form for young viewers.

Kids may not know every technical term, but they feel the emotion, follow the story, and admire the elegance. For families looking for something special to do together, watching Swan Lake live is a meaningful and memorable experience.

A Personal Performance for Lisa Macuja Elizalde

For Macuja Elizalde, Swan Lake holds deep personal significance. She has performed the iconic roles of Odette and Odile herself, and knows the technical and emotional depth the ballet demands. “Swan Lake has always been one of my most beloved roles. The duality of Odette and Odile pushes a ballerina to her limits, both technically and emotionally,” she said.

This connection to the material adds even more heart to the production, which also serves as a reflection of Ballet Manila’s legacy and growth over the past three decades.
