SM Supermalls Ignites a Culture of Safety Across the Philippines This Fire Prevention Month

11:07 PM

Public safety took center stage this Fire Prevention Month as SM Supermalls joined forces with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to roll out a series of nationwide initiatives designed to equip Filipinos with life-saving knowledge and practical preparedness skills.

Held across SM’s expansive network of malls, the month-long campaign brought together employees, tenants, emergency responders, students, and local communities in a unified push toward fire safety awareness and disaster readiness. The effort reflects a growing movement to build resilient communities where preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.

Thousands Mobilized for Nationwide Fire Drill

At the heart of the campaign was the 5th SM and BFP Nationwide Simultaneous Fire Drill, spearheaded by SM Cares. Nearly 30,000 participants took part, marking a 30% increase from last year. The drill carried the empowering theme “Sa pag-iwas sa sunog hindi ka nag-iisa, kababaihan kasama mo!”, highlighting the vital role of women in safety and emergency response.

Participants didn’t just observe, they actively practiced evacuation procedures, learned coordination strategies, and strengthened their readiness for real-life emergencies. From mall staff to nearby residents, the drill transformed everyday spaces into hubs of learning and action.

Fire Safety Goes Interactive With Road Shows

Beyond drills, fire prevention education came alive through the Fire Square Road Show, staged in 16 SM malls nationwide. The program reached over 8,600 individuals through hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and up-close showcases of firefighting equipment.

Families, students, and mallgoers were given the chance to engage directly with safety experts, turning complex emergency protocols into practical, easy-to-understand lessons that could save lives.

A Powerful Visual Tribute at SM Mall of Asia

One of the campaign’s most striking moments unfolded at the SM Mall of Asia Globe, where 263 fire trucks and emergency vehicles formed a massive Venus symbol. With 2,827 participants involved, the display honored firefighters while symbolizing unity, empowerment, and preparedness.

The illumination in purple also aligned with Women’s Month, reinforcing the message of inclusivity and the crucial role women play in public safety and community leadership.

Recognizing Heroes in Fire Service

The campaign also marked the official launch of the Ten Outstanding Firefighters of the Philippines (TOFF) 2026, now on its third year. The program celebrates Filipino firefighters who exemplify excellence in fire safety, emergency response, and community education.

With support from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), including Undersecretary Rolando C. Puno, the initiative underscores a strong public-private partnership committed to a safer nation.

Building Safer Communities Together

Through these initiatives, SM Supermalls continues to go beyond being a retail destination, positioning itself as a vital community partner in safety and resilience. By making fire prevention education accessible, engaging, and inclusive, the campaign leaves a lasting impact that extends far beyond mall walls.

As Fire Prevention Month draws to a close, one message remains clear: preparedness saves lives, and when communities work together, everyone is safer.
